Badgers of Uncertain Fortune

August 17th, 2011 by Brandon

A few friends of mine recently embarked on a challenge to write a new short story every week for 3 months. We set up a web site to chronicle those stories. You can find that site here.

We are in week two, so I only have two stories up there right now. But I shall add more over time.

The first is Boring Story and the second is Going Home.

What’s that? You need a suggestion for a sweet Valentine’s Day gift? How about a copy of Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii? It’s two player!

Total Fail

November 29th, 2010 by Brandon

As I feared, I totally failed this year’s NaNoWriMo challenge. I was doing pretty well until I got sick. And when I got better, I left town for several days. So, blech.

I shall, however, continue working on the novel.

On Shaky Ground

November 19th, 2010 by Brandon

I’ve spent the last week holed up on the couch, sick with allergies. My throat has been so sore, the thought of swallowing anything fills me with dread, and my body has been racked with aches. This means I have not been able to work on my NaNoWriMo novel. I am now about one week behind. Luckily, I have the next week off from work, so hopefully I can get back on track. It is going to be a hell of a bumpy ride.

Day Off

November 8th, 2010 by Brandon

I was ahead on my word count goals last week, so I took the weekend off from NaNoWriMo. That puts me about a day behind now. But I am confident I can make it up over time. I remember when I did this in 2002, I fell extremely far behind and had to make up for it with an epic 8000 word mad dash on the final day. I shall try to avoid that situation this year.

Day 8 is online, by the way. Proof that I did manage to resume the novel after my lazy weekend.

National Novel Writing Month

November 2nd, 2010 by Brandon

I am participating in National Novel Writing Month, yo. That means I am going to write a short, bad novel in 30 days. It’ll be short because it will only be 50,000 words. It’ll be bad because you cannot write a good novel in 30 days! Or at least, I can’t. And that’s the appeal of the experiment. The challenge is not to write a good novel; the challenge is to write a novel at all.

I did this a few years ago and had a great time. I wrote a terrible science fiction epic that contained a handful of good bits, bits I’ve since stolen and integrated into other works. And while the story was not very good, I learned several lessons that have improved my writing skills. And I hope to learn even more lessons this year.

If you want to keep up with the novel, please check out the novel page. I will update it every day with my latest progress.

New Short Story

April 8th, 2010 by Brandon

I just published a short science fiction story to my website. I am experimenting with writing extremely short fiction these days, stories that only take a couple minutes to read. Basically, stuff you can read while your code compiles or your burrito heats up in the microwave. This one combines four of my favorite themes: apocalypse, time travel, robots, and astronomy. Enjoy.
